Mountain pines, four lakes, and the easiest mountain weekend from Phoenix.
Plan your Prescott, Arizona trip in one spot: things to do, where to stay, where to eat, weather and the best time to visit, and the day trips worth taking.
A mountain escape from the Phoenix heat.Sitting at 5,200 feet in the cool pines of central Arizona, Prescott runs noticeably cooler than the Valley most of the summer. Most visitors are here for the same three things: the air, the trails, and a downtown that still feels like a small Western town.
Downtown is built around the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza, with Whiskey Row saloons on one side, weekend farmers markets on the other, and live music every Friday and Saturday. The Palace Saloon has been pouring since 1877 and Wyatt Earp drank there.
Outside town, four lakes inside city limits handle the kayak, swim, and trout days: Watson Lake, Willow, Lynx, and Goldwater. The Granite Dells boulder fields swallow Watson Lake whole. Hike Thumb Butte for the postcard view, ride the Prescott Circle Trail, or grab a jeep tour into the Bradshaw Mountains.
Time it right and you catch the World’s Oldest Rodeo over the 4th of July (Frontier Days since 1888), Arizona’s Christmas City light parade in December, the Bluegrass Festival, or the Whiskey Off-Road. Day-trip to Sedona, Jerome, Verde Valley wine country, or the Grand Canyon Railway in Williams when you want a change of scenery.
