About this experience
Easy guided night hike in the Prescott National Forest with a small-group stargazing portion under genuinely dark central-Arizona skies. The route picks one of several pine-forest overlooks depending on moon phase and weather. Constellation guidance, basic astronomy, and the kind of quiet you only get an hour from town.
Plan your Prescott Night Hike & Stargazing
Prescott Arizona sits at 5,367 feet of elevation with the Prescott National Forest rolling out of town in three directions. That combination - high elevation, low ambient light, and pine-forest cover - makes Prescott AZ one of the better dark-sky stargazing windows in central Arizona. A guided night hike pairs the easy Prescott National Forest singletrack with a small-group stargazing portion at a pre-scouted overlook.
What you'll see overhead
Depending on month, expect the Milky Way core in summer and early fall, Orion and the winter constellations from November through February, Jupiter and Saturn during their visible windows, and meteor showers through August (Perseids) and December (Geminids). The guides bring a green laser pointer for constellation tracing and a brief astronomy talk.
Where the route goes
Specific trail picks rotate based on moon phase, weather, and seasonal access - typically a short 1 to 2 mile section of Prescott National Forest singletrack south or west of town, away from city light. No headlamp needed; the guides provide one. Easy pace, family-friendly.
What to bring
A jacket (Prescott AZ nights cool off fast even in summer), closed-toe shoes, water bottle. Headlamp and trail snacks supplied. Wear layers in winter - high-elevation Prescott runs into the 30s after dark.
How it pairs
Stack the night hike with a Whiskey Row dinner before pickup, or a Hassayampa Inn / Hotel Vendome stay if you want to walk back to a downtown hotel after. Pairs naturally with a Watson Lake morning the next day.
