The drive
I-17 north 95 miles to the Cordes Junction exit (AZ-69), then 35 miles west on AZ-69 into Prescott Valley and Prescott. Two hours without traffic, more on Friday evening.
Two-night plan
Friday: arrive evening, dinner on Whiskey Row. Saturday: morning at Watson Lake, afternoon downtown shopping and a hike at Thumb Butte, dinner at El Gato Azul. Sunday: brunch at High Desert Bakehouse, drive back.
Why Phoenix residents come up
Summer temperatures run 15 to 20 degrees cooler. Rooms at $150 to $250 a night beat most Sedona equivalents. Walkable downtown is a relief after Phoenix sprawl.
Booking ahead
June through August weekends sell out two to three weeks ahead. Frontier Days week (late June) sells out months ahead. Christmas Lighting weekend (early December) is the second-toughest.
Add-ons
Day trip to Jerome or Sedona on Saturday if you want to extend. Verde Canyon Railroad for a longer day.
