Prescott to Grand Canyon drive

3 min read5 sections
Quick answer
Prescott to Grand Canyon South Rim runs about 165 miles and 3 hours 15 minutes via I-17 to I-40 to AZ-64 through Williams. A day trip works but is long; overnight in Williams or Tusayan handles it better.

Route

AZ-89 north to Chino Valley, on through Ash Fork to I-40, east to Williams, then AZ-64 north 60 miles to the South Rim entrance. Roughly 165 miles, 3 hours 15 minutes.

Day trip plan

Leave Prescott by 6 a.m., arrive South Rim by 9:30 a.m., walk Mather Point and the Rim Trail, lunch at Bright Angel Lodge, depart by 3 p.m., back in Prescott by 6:30 p.m. Tight but workable.

Overnight option

Williams (60 miles south of the rim) or Tusayan (just outside the park entrance) handle overnight stays. The Grand Canyon Railway runs round-trip from Williams to the rim and is a fun no-driving option.

Park entry

$35 per vehicle for seven days, or America the Beautiful pass at $80 annually. Reserve in advance during summer; the park gets busy.

Best time to go

Spring and fall have the best weather. Summer is hot at the rim (90 degrees on the rim, 110-plus inside the canyon) and crowded. Winter has snow but cleared roads and lighter crowds.
