
Prescott to Flagstaff drive
Route 1: AZ-89A scenic
Take AZ-89A northeast through Jerome, down into the Verde Valley at Cottonwood, then up Oak Creek Canyon out of Sedona. About 90 miles, 2 hours without stops, longer with photo stops. Best for first-time visitors.
Route 2: I-17 direct
AZ-69 east to I-17 north past Camp Verde and Stoneman Lake exit to Flagstaff. About 95 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes. Faster but less scenic.
What to do in Flagstaff
Lowell Observatory, Northern Arizona University campus, Heritage Square downtown, the San Francisco Peaks (Humphreys Peak at 12,633 feet is Arizona's highest), Wupatki National Monument, Sunset Crater Volcano.
Elevation gain
Prescott at 5,367 feet to Flagstaff at 7,000 feet. The drive crosses the Mogollon Rim transition. Expect cooler temps and more snow potential at the Flagstaff end.
