Spruce Mountain Lookout

Active fire lookout tower at the high point. Open to visitors when staffed in fire season. Panoramic view to Granite Mountain, San Francisco Peaks, and the Bradshaws.

Trailhead

Groom Creek Trailhead off Senator Highway, about 20 minutes south of downtown. Parking lot, bathroom, and information board.

Best season

Year-round but peak windows are May-June for cool temps and late September-October for aspen color.

Tips

Bring layers; the lookout sits 2,000 feet above downtown and runs cooler. Three liters of water minimum. Watch for snow at the top November through April.
