Prescott altitude
How elevation feels
Most visitors arriving from sea level notice mild shortness of breath on uphill walks the first day. Sleep can run lighter the first night. By day two most people feel normal at rest. Strenuous hikes still load harder than at sea level.
Hydration
Dry air pulls more water out of you than humid lowland air. Plan two to three liters a day for active visitors. Coffee and alcohol both hit harder at altitude.
UV exposure
UV runs higher per thousand feet of elevation. A cool 70-degree day can still burn skin in two hours of midday sun. Sunscreen daily.
Hiking with altitude
Plan less mileage than your sea-level pace, especially the first 24 to 48 hours. Thumb Butte's 600-foot climb feels harder than the same climb at lower elevation.
When to be cautious
Heart, lung, or pregnancy considerations should follow doctor guidance. Most people are fine. Going up to Granite Mountain (7,626) or San Francisco Peaks (over 12,000 outside Flagstaff) loads more.
