Peavine Trail, Prescott AZ
The route
The Peavine follows the old Santa Fe rail bed through the Granite Dells. The Watson Lake section is the most iconic. Continuing north, the trail extends miles into open country.
Access points
Most visitors start from Watson Lake Park. Sundog Ranch Road and Side Road offer additional access. Each has parking.
Peavine Trail parking
Watson Lake Park is the main Peavine parking lot. It is paved, well-marked off Highway 89, and charges a $3 day-use fee at the entrance kiosk on weekends and busy days. The lot fills by 10 a.m. on weekends from April through October. For free parking, the Sundog Ranch Road trailhead sits a half mile south of the Watson Lake entrance and accesses the same Peavine section. The Iron Springs / Side Road access on the north end is gravel, free, and far less crowded but adds driving time. Do not park on the Highway 89 shoulder. Tickets are issued.
Surface and grade
Crushed gravel and packed dirt. Flat enough for road bikes in places. Strollers handle most of it.
Dogs and bikes
Both welcome. Yield to faster riders on blind curves through the granite.
